Fighting for pension justice
The government has abandoned 125,000 victims of collapsed company pension schemes - it's time to demand compensation for this huge social injustice.
Despite assurance that victims of collapsed company pension schemes would be compensated, the government has abandoned 125,000 workers. The upshot - thousands of let down workers are facing a financially uncertain retirement and are rightly demanding compensation.
The workers are not alone in calling for government compensation. The Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Public Administration Select Committee are also urging those now facing an uncertain future to be financially reassured. The calls go to the top of Parliament, following the use of "misleading" figures by Tony Blair himself.
In response to the crisis, Saga has announced their support for those people campaigning for compensation. The unjust nature of the situation - people who have worked hard and taken care to save facing uncertain futures - should strike a chord with most of the population.
The Pensions Action Group are delighted that Saga have joined the campaign, and with over 2 million customers they could have a powerful impact. Dr. Ros Altmann, an expert on pensions and the spokesperson for the PAG said: "We are talking about a gross injustice, that the Government is morally obliged to fix and that the nation is well able to afford. After all, the Chancellor has taken well over £3bn out of pensions funds every year since 1997."
