With Britain facing a looming pensions crisis, the government is being urged to take more action to encourage people to start saving money for their retirement pension.
Nationalist SDLP deputy leader Dr Alasdair McDonnell said that he believes the government should get involved in campaigns aimed at raising public awareness about saving money for their retirement pension.
"The Government must make it easier for people to save for their retirement," the South Belfast MP suggested.
He believes people would start saving money if the government runs pensions workshops in companies, schools and community centres.
"One of the best ways of doing this is to make the process of starting and changing a pension easier to understand," he explained.
Dr McDonnell said a lack of knowledge and access to information is preventing the establishment of a savings culture.
He said many people worry about their retirement pension but do not possess the necessary basic information needed to help them make informed choices about investment in retirement pensions.
"There certainly needs to be a real and effective education drive to boost public knowledge on pensions for all age groups," he urged.
