New efforts are being made by the government and public sector unions to bring an ongoing pensions dispute to an end, with work and pensions secretary Alan Johnson due for round table discussions about pensions toady.
Unison, the T&G and Amicus agreed to drop a recently proposed strike after receiving government assurances that government pensions plans would be brought back to negotiation.
The strike action, due to start last week, was in response to government plans to raise the retirement age of public servants to 65 and abandon final salary pensions, in favour of retirement pay based on whole career averages.
Unions accused the government of trying to introduce the reforms without consultation and threatened to strike. Union leaders are now expected to urge the government to abandon the planned reforms.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the summit would allow unions to put their views to ministers on the future of public sector pensions. "We all hope that the summit will be a productive first step in sorting out the future of public sector pensions," he added.
