Pension households urged to apply for Winter Fuel Payments

Thu, 10 Aug 2006

Older people reliant on a pension for their income have been urged to apply for Winter Fuel Payments early, to ensure that their home is heated in the colder months.

UK residents whose main source of income is from a pension could benefit from the extra fund, which provides £200 to help with heating in winter.

James Purnell, the minister for pension reform, has claimed that more than eight million UK households could benefit from the scheme.

"We want to make sure everyone who is eligible applies for the help they deserve."

"If you have not received a Winter Fuel Payment in the past, you need to apply in order to claim your first payment.

This year, automatic payments will be paid to over 11 million people aged 60 and over, while those over 80 will receive extra money, at up to £300.

The Department of Work and Pensions will make automatic payments to the pension household over a number of weeks from November until Christmas, with applications expected in before September 22nd.
