Retirement pension help sought, survey shows

Fri, 17 Feb 2006

Planning for a retirement pension remains the most important reason for Britons to ask the help of a financial adviser, according to IFA Promotion.

The representative body of independent financial advisers (IFAs) revealed that help with retirement pension planning is the top motive of more than a third of Britons for visiting a financial adviser.

IFA Promotion also revealed that consumers are increasingly seeking out independent financial advice.

A year-on-year increase of almost 100,000 cases handled by IFAs has been reported last year.

Despite the tripling in awareness about A-Day – the day when changes to the UK pensions system come into effect – people are still not taking enough action to plan for their retirement pension, comments David Elms, the chief executive of IFA Promotion.

"The encouraging news is of course that we were able to put well over half a million people in touch with a local IFA to best suit their needs last year," he adds.

Other popular reasons for seeking out independent financial advice was to get help with investment and savings planning, mortgages and stakeholder pensions, IFA Promotion found.
