Carers urged to heed changes to UK pensions

Thu, 12 Jan 2006

Those in the caring profession are being urged to ensure they understand their pension rights and that they are prepared for the changes in UK pensions due to come into force in April.

Stephen Timms, the pensions reform minister, says carers should boost their pensions whether they are employed or not.

"It is important that carers are aware of their entitlements and take the steps to receive the maximum benefit," Mr Timms says.

He says pension reforms introduced by the government ensure that carers and people with long-term illness can benefit from building a larger pension.

"Many carers and parents will receive their additional state pension automatically. However, it is still important for people to make sure this is the case for them," Mr Timms continues.

He explains that unpaid carers, for example, may need to apply for home responsibilities protection to ensure they don't miss out.

This year will be "very significant" for the future of the UK pensions system, according to the minister.

"We want people to act now and not miss out," he concludes.
