The average Briton expects to spend more than their
state pension will provide, according to new research.
When trying to budget for the week, UK adults overspent their state
pension allowance by an average of 158 per cent, in a recent AXA study.
The highest overspend was £327.18 more than a state pension will provide, with all but one respondent budgeting within their allowance.
Some 28 per cent of the spending was on drink, tobacco, leisure activities, papers and gambling.
Women taking part in the experiment overspent by 200 per cent, lasting for two-and-a-half days on their budget, although men lasted longer, overspending by 79 per cent on average.
Saran Allott Davey, AXA Avenue's resident independent financial adviser, claimed that the results of the experiment were "startling".
"The majority of those that took part have had a real wake up call and are much more aware of the need to plan.
"However, with this experiment and the full pension forecasts I have been able to go through with them, they have been given a call to action and a route to make positive changes for the future."
A recent Scottish Widows research showed that some 11 out of 12 Britons are not saving enough for the income they plan for after reaching retirement.
