Pension dispute may result in firefighter row

Fri, 12 Oct 2007

A national strike by firefighters could become a reality due to a dispute over pension schemes . The union that represents firefighters, the Fire Brigades Union, are seeking a meeting with the government to resolve the disputes. They recently claimed that the pension rights of firefighters were under threat.

The debate has been sparked following claims that ill-health pensions for firefighters could cease. The Fire Brigades Union claim that the government is misleading them over changes to the pension scheme .

The general secretary of the FBU, Matt Wrack, reportedly commented: "We work above and beyond the call of duty at major incidents including terrorist attacks. Firefighters need to know they will get a pension if they can't work because they have been injured at an emergency incident. The public will understand this is an appalling way to treat injured firefighters. If this issue isn't settled we will be looking at balloting or industrial action."
