Pensioners will see a boost to their income

Mon, 15 Dec 2008

Pensioners will see a boost to their regular income from April 2009, with a five per cent increase to the state pension .

This means that individuals on a full pension will now receive £95.25 rather than £90.70.

Commenting on the changes, Rosie Winterton, minister for pensions and the ageing society, said that during tough times the government wants to give "real help" to pensioners .

"I want to do all we can to help those pensioners on the lowest incomes, and the increase in Pension Credit will mean that we can lift even more people out of poverty," she noted.

This announcement follows news that eligible pensioners will have their Christmas bonus increased from £10 to £70 this winter.

Last week, it was reported that the Financial Services Authority is looking to improve its pension advice .

Research showed that guidance given to those switching into a personal pension or self-invested personal pension has been of a variable quality.
