Council tax used to finance pensions

Fri, 29 Feb 2008

According to recent reports, one fifth of all council tax is being used to finance pensions for local government.

The pension news indicates that each local council spends as much as 10 million pounds every year on pension contributions, an increase of 13 per cent on the year before.

The Taxpayers Alliance conducted a study into the spending . The chairman of the group, Andrew Allum, was reported in the pensions news as commenting: "It's unacceptable that ordinary families and pensioners who struggle to pay inflated council tax bills see so much of their money spent on gold-plated council pensions that have all but disappeared in the wider economy."

The pressure group is calling for reform to the system.
