Pension problem forces government to act

Fri, 22 Feb 2008

Pensioner poverty, whereby thousands of old people throughout the country simply cannot survive on their pension schemes, is forcing the government to act. The government has now pledged to tackle poverty amongst pensioners, and to protect the most vulnerable by increasing the welfare state .

The Work and Pensions Minister, Mike O’Brien, has made it clear that pensioners will be pulled out of poverty with a range of benefits .

O’Brien reportedly commented: "We have a primary aim of helping the poorest in our society and making sure they don't get poorer. These are the people on the lowest income and it's important that when we see inflation rise that we at least seek to maintain or improve the situation of the poorest."

This will include an increase of pension credit .
