Pensions could cause fire strike

Mon, 11 Feb 2008

According to the pensions news today, firefighters in both England and Wales could be preparing for a major strike amidst a decision to stop pensions in the case of ill-health.

The unions are clear that new pension rules could result in firefighters who are injured and cannot be redeployed could be made redundant . How the situation will be resolved depends on the area, for Welsh firefighters are taking the strike to the Welsh Assembly .

If firefighters are injured, their careers are usually cut short, and this means that they pay more into pensions than any other public sector workers, as much as 11 per cent. New pension rules mean that if a firefighter is injured and there are no suitable job vacancies, they will be dismissed with no pension until 60.
