According to recent reports, changes to the pension scheme and a mounting dispute between unions and employers over pension shortfalls could cause major rail strike action later this month.
Various unions, including ASLEF, are upset by pensions-related matters this week. ASLEF are angered by a failure to top up a pensions shortfall by London Midland, who took over the franchise from Silverlink.
A statement from ASLEF reportedly said: "Some train drivers the ones nearest to retirement - stand to lose £2,700 (US$5,295) a year from the pensions they expected to receive and £4,700 from the lump sum to which they expected to be entitled. London Midland agrees that this is the case, but says that it is prepared to do no more than share the cost of putting it right some £1.4m."
