According to a recent study by the Commission for Rural Communities, elderly people that live in remote and rural areas are considerably less likely to make claims for their pension credits, when compared to people of a similar age that live in urban areas.
The commission uncovered the discrepancy from pensions figures. According to their research, approximately 42 per cent of eligible rural people of pension age do not claim their pension credit entitlement, compared to some 35 per cent in urban areas. When isolated rural areas are considered, the figure increases to 54 per cent.
The Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) estimates that as many as 250,000 people in rural areas alone do not make claims for their pension credits, despite being entitled to them.
