Pension deal for striking workers

Mon, 07 Jan 2008

Several large strikes at the busiest airports in the UK have been called off, as the operator BAA has settled in a dispute over pensions for workers. The strikes over pension schemes, which would have plunged Heathrow and Gatwick into chaos, are understood to be called off.

BAA, which is owned by the Spanish company Grupo Ferrovial SA, have apparently reversed their decision to close their final salary pension scheme to all new entrants. Walkouts that were planned for January 17th and 14th have now been called off, according to the Unite union.

The Unite national aviation secretary, Brendan Gold, reportedly commented: "This is good news for our members, for BAA and for air travellers . It is total vindication of the action taken by our members in voting to defend their pension scheme ."

Furthermore, BAA agreed not to make any changes to the pension scheme without first consulting workers.
