The pensions news today indicates that the government will drop a key pension target to get three million pensioner households to claim for pension credit . The target was due to be reached next month, but will fall short.
Mike OBrien, the Pensions Minister, remained optimistic, however. Although not setting a new target at this date, the aim of the ministry is to enrol some 235,000 new claims during 2008.
A spokeswoman for charity Age Concern went on record to say that even missing out on pensions claims of £26 could really affect people living on low income. Sally West was report on Radio 4s Money Box as commenting:
"Individual people who are entitled to pension credit but do not claim, are missing out on an average of £26 a week, which can make a big difference to people living on a low income. If you take the three benefits - pension credit, council tax benefit, housing benefit - the estimate is that up to £4.6bn is unclaimed each year."
