Search for women owed a billion in pensions

Tue, 06 May 2008

The search is on for UK females who are owed some £1 billion in unpaid pensions . The Times uncovered government flaws in the pension system that have left almost half a million women not receiving their full pension . The government has launched its own investigation.

The pensions reform minister, Mike O’Brien reportedly commented: "We are going to review the national insurance records of vast numbers of women approaching or over pensionable age who are not entitled to the full basic state pension ."

He reportedly continued: "The Department for Work and Pensions and HMRC \ have started urgent work on a special exercise to identify those who may have been affected — this will involve reviewing the national insurance records of thousands of women who are over state pension age."

Rival political parties have seized on the issue, highlighting female pension plight. The government is expected to foot the bill with backdated sums.
