Company pension laws to be reviewed

Thu, 13 Nov 2008

According to recent pensions news, pensions minister Rosie Winterton is scheduled to announce a fresh review of laws regarding company pension schemes .

UK statistics indicate that companies are having problems with the paying in system of pension schemes when businesses are taken over or restructured. As falling stocks affect pension funds, companies that take over other companies often have a large deficit.

The TUC general secretary Brendan Barber was reported as commenting: "We welcome the commitment from ministers that this review will not harm pension scheme members, but we have yet to see any way that this can be reconciled with what business want. There seems to be a pretty clear choice here. Either companies meet their pension scheme liabilities or they don't. We doubt that any review can overcome this fundamental point."
