Shortfall in pensions will be met

Mon, 09 Mar 2009

According to the Cabinet Office, shortfalls in pension payments will be made up from next month on. As many as 5,000 public sector workers who have not received their full pension scheme entitlement will be reimbursed. For some, the pension deficit has been running for decades.

The Cabinet Office admitted that it has underpaid for between 2 months and twenty years. As many as 95,000 retired public workers have been overpaid their pension, but they will not be charged for the overpayments. The correct amounts will be implemented as of next month.

Those who have been underpaid include around 5 per cent of teachers, civil servants, workers in the national health service and armed forces personnel. The average increase in pension payments will be around £1,300.
