Male pensions are two times bigger

Fri, 19 Feb 2010

Male pensions are two-thirds larger than woman seeking to retire this year, according to recent pension scheme research. Men drawing a pension during 2010 will get an average income of over 12,000 pounds but women will get an average of 7,424 pounds. The research was conducted by Prudential .

Pensions for new retirees fell considerably for both sexes in the last 12 months. However, female retirement income fell three times as much as men. Those women who give up work this year will receive 11 per cent less pension on average compared to those women who retired last year.

Director of pensions and annuities at Prudential, Karin Brown, reportedly commented: "The reason women appear to get less in their pensions than men is embedded in years of history and, to a certain extent, because some women take a career break to have children which has an impact."
